TINCHY STRYDER

Since being voted best newcomer at Sidewinder this year, all eyes have been on East Londons hottest new export Tinchy Stryder. But whats the deal? Is he from Ruff Squad? Or Roll Deep? Is there really an album with an all-star cast on the way? And is he only 14?

14?!? Na! Im 17! I dont know why everyone keeps saying that! Thats madness! Tinchy tells me. Ok. So the rumours were wrong, (and yes, we printed them last month My bad) but you heard it here first, hes 17 and right now there is more talk on the streets about this kid than any other MC in the scene.
Hailing from Bow, (why do all the good MCs come from Bow? Is there something in the water?) Tinchy and the other 7 members of Ruff Squad (Slicks, Shifty, Dirty Danger, Scholar, Rapid, Mad Max and DJ Degg) got together 4 years ago, starting out on stations like Heat, then Flava and Mystic before settling on De Ja where they have been for the last year. In the last twelve months grimy anthems like Tings in Boots, Pied Piper and Misty Cold have helped cement Ruff Squads status as a premier league crew and finally the hard work is starting to pay off
You can tell by the response you get Tinchy explains, At raves, we are doing a lot now, also the talk on road Some MCs just MC but they dont really know whats going on, on the road innit but we know innit. All the MCs in Ruff Squad know and we compete in a healthy way and we always talk about both sides of the story. If we talk about violence, we talk about the aftermath as well. Some people do talk about things that are not necessary though, adds Shifty. We talk about whats happening, good and bad We talk positive and negative, the negative is growing up in Bow and seeing the things we see, but the positive aspect is about wanting to get out and where we want to be.
It looks like Tinchy and the rest of the squad could be getting where they want to be sooner rather than later. With A&Rs on the case already and an album in the pipeline, industry insiders are already hailing him as the next Dizzee, with rumours circulating that he even left to join Roll Deep? There should be no confusion. Im in Ruff Squad. I just do a few things with Wiley, Dizzee and the Roll Deep mans. Were all just from the area innit. As for being the next Dizzee, thats not what Im here to do. Im me innit. This time last year he was best newcomer, its like Im following in his footsteps and thats a good thing, but I dont wanna be seen as the next Dizzee Rascal. Every MC has a different kinda flow
Right now the whole camp is concentrating on getting Tinchys album finished. Pushing Tinchy now makes more sense, says Shifty, cos hes so hot right now he can go through. So far the whole thing sounds kinda different adds Tinchy, We got producers like Dirty Danger, Rapid, Wiley, Dizzee, Skepta and all the big underground producers on there. Its similar beats to what is going on in the scene right now but as an album Its different. Dizzee doing so well means people are more used to that sound now, but it dont mean everyone will go through. If youre not good enough it wont happen. We aint doing this for the money first; its an art form. We know what people wanna hear as well cos we are fans first.

Catch Tinchy Stryder and Ruff Squad on De Ja Vu 92.3FM on Mondays 4-6pm.

JAMMER AND NASTY CREW PART COMPANY

Producer Jammer has left N.A.S.T.Y after a series of disputes with the rest of the group. "He wasn't paying members of the crew for tunes they made, pushing himself to the front of the crew, doing DJ bookings and interviews on his own" Marcus Nasty told RWD, "Jammer didn't leave, he was kicked out. The crew was tight when I went inside; when I came out they were close to splitting up. We should have blown a year ago and I believe Jammer held them back. He's a good producer but he's got the wrong attitude and done too many wrong things to the crew." Jammer hit back at the allegations, saying "Before Marcus came out, I told a few of them I was leaving, a few of them ain't really real, I ain't on the crew thing, I'm rapping now as well, I've got my album coming with Wiley, D Double, Kano. If it wasn't for my beats N.A.S.T.Y. wouldn't have got big, but there are no hard feelings. I left, I wasn't kicked out." A N.A.S.T.Y album is also on the way, with old skool, FWD beats, R&B and hip hop on there as well as grime and surprisingly a few Jammer productions.
